Last week, Planned Parent-hood founder Margaret Sanger was examined for evidence of a racist and eugenic agenda in her early work, and was caught red-handed. Her colleagues had ties with the Third Reich, and spoke publicly about the “Jew Problem” and the “black peril.” (Knopf, 1925.) She herself called black aborigines “just a step higher than the chimpanzee.” (What Every Girl Should Know, 1920.)
However, when issues about the history of Planned Parent-hood and its founder come up, two common criticisms are:
- “Just because she was racist then doesn’t mean Planned Parent-hood is racist now. They even had an African American president, Faye Wattleton!”
- “Planned Parent-hood is mostly about birth control; they existed decades before abortion was even legal.”
Ironically, that’s exactly the point of this article. Planned Parent-hood is about birth control; it was born out of a eugenic movement that recommended sterilization and segregation as its primary birth control tools. And immediately after sterilization and segregation legally failed, abortion appeared on the scene, and minorities were targeted for abortion just as heavily as they were targeted before for sterilization and segregation. The sad truth: abortion became a far more effective and
lucrative eugenic tactic than anything that came before it.
More sadly still, the eugenic movement seduced black leadership by rebranding eugenic birth control as a civil right, and that’s exactly how an African American woman could end up as president of a still-racist organization.
The Seduction of Black Leadership and the Founding of the Negro Project
In 1939, Sanger retooled the Birth Control League to become the Birth Control Federation of America. Under this new name, Sanger’s first goal was called the “The Negro Project,” intended to persuade black women to stop having children.
Dr. Clarence Gamble (of Proctor and Gamble fame) who had served as director of the Birth Control League and was appointed as the regional director of the South, sent Sanger a memo entitled “Suggestion for Negro Project,” where he warned that black leaders would likely see her strategy as a plot to exterminate the blacks. His solution? Enlist carefully selected black leaders to spread the word instead. They’d take the pill if it were from their own people and no one would suspect a thing!
He even had a strategy worked out: merge it with the familiar and trusted framework of their current religious practice. The steps were simple and effective:
- Enlist skilled black ministers with a gift for revivalist tactics to gather and excite people
- At the right moment, parade “colored nurses” and “colored doctors” in front of the crowd as the message moves towards improving the lives of black families.
A clever bait and switch, wouldn’t you say? In Sanger’s reply letter on Dec. 10. 1939, she agreed with his strategy. “We do not want the word to go out that we want to exterminate the Negro population, and the minister is the man who can straighten that idea out if it ever occurs to any of their more rebellious members.”
Within months, two Negro Projects were started in the south, and the BCFA began testing black leadership to see if they would bite. Once of her early enlistees was Dr. W. E. Burghardt DuBois, who in June of 1932 had published the article “Black Folk and Birth Control” in which he make a critical distinction between “those Negroes who were striving to improve their economic position and those whose religious faith made the limitation of children a sin.” He starkly condemned the “mass of ignorant negroes” and called their childbearing both careless and disastrous, since those who were “least intelligent and fit, and least able to rear their children properly” were the ones having the most children.
In that same June, 1932 edition, black author Walter A. Terpenning said, “The birth of a colored child, even to parents who can give it adequate support, is pathetic in view of the unchristian and undemocratic treatment likely to be accorded it at the hands of a predominantly white community.”
Another prominent black supporter was Charles S. Johnson, Fisk University’s first black president, who wrote that “eugenic discrimination” was necessary for blacks because of higher rates of disease and infection among black mothers and infants. Johnson went on to join the National Advisory Council to the Birth Control Federation of America.
Once Black leadership in church, academics, and politics began selling eugenics as a vehicle for the enhancement the lives of African Americans, the lie was sold.
Targeting Blacks in South Carolina
The BCFA opened the second clinic for the Negro Project on May 1, 1940, in rural Berkeley County, South Carolina. The area was 70% black. When the clinic failed to improve the lives of the local black community as promised, blame was laid on their moral restrictions and ignorance, instead of on the harsh medical realities and racial discrimination of the day. In a speech about the future direction of the BCFA at their 1942 annual meeting, board member Dr. Dorothy B. Ferebee said that future programs needed to focus more on recruiting and training black professionals to reach those currently resistant to the idea, since the function of the ABCL was a “vital key to the elimination of human waste” and to be effective it “must reach the entire population.” Among her reasons for soliciting black professional for this job were that they would “not be suspect of the intent to eliminate the race.”
How Eugenics Used the Civil Rights Movement as the Ultimate Smokescreen
Below, I’ve sketched out an interesting timeline of certain 20th century events. As you read it, watch the intertwined threads of two very different movements converge on a single point. First, observe a strong eugenic movement striving to sterilize and segregate inferiors. Entangled historically with that movement is another totally unrelated movement: civil rights for women and for minorities.
- 1917: Sanger publishes the first edition of the Birth Control Review, her chief pro-eugenic mouthpiece
- 1920: The 19th Amendment grants women the right to vote.
- 1921: Sanger, Stoddard and others start the American Birth Control League
- 1926: Sanger gives a lecture to the women’s auxiliary of the Klu Klux Klan
- 1930+: 17 States passed sterilization laws, and thousands of minority women each year were sterilized against their will
- 1933: Rudin writes the sterilization laws for Nazi Germany and publishes an article in Sanger’s Birth Control Review
- 1939: Sanger’s American Birth Control League becomes Birth Control Federation of America
- 1940: The BCFA Negro Project opens a clinic Berkeley County, SC, an area that was 70% black.
- 1942: Birth Control Federation of American becomes Planned Parent-hood Federation of America
- 1947: Segregation is ended in national sports by the acceptance of Jackie Robinson
- 1952: International Planned Parent-hood Federation is launched
- 1954: Brown v Board of Ed decision rules school segregation to be unconstitutional
- 1955: Rosa Parks refuses to give up her bus seat
- 1962: Alan Guttmacher becomes president of Planned Parent-hood
- 1964: Civil rights act bars discrimination based on race and sex.
- 1966: The National Organization for Women is founded
- 1969: NARAL is founded (National Association for the Repeal of Abortion Laws) and pro-abortion campaigns are launched across the country
- 1972: Forced sterilization of minority women is struck down in court
- 1973: Abortion is de-criminalized in Roe v Wade and Doe v Bolton, in the name of civil rights
- 1974-2011: Planned Parent-hood rapidly becomes the leading provider of abortions in the United States.
Another clever bait and switch.
Is the Eugenics Program Still Going On?
So how has the eugenic program faired since segregation and sterilization have been made illegal, and abortion made legal? Before 1972, thousands of minority women were sterilized each year, but almost immediately after Roe v Wade in 1973, the number of legal abortions quickly climbed into the millions.
Since it was legal for everyone, this doesn’t immediately indicate anything racial, except for two very important facts:
- The birth control campaigns like the Negro Project that gave birth to Planned Parent-hood heavily targeted minorities
- Planned Parent-hood has placed the vast majority of their clinics in minority neighborhoods
The result? According to the Guttmacher Institute, black women are 5 times more likely than white women to have an abortion. Since Roe v Wade, 10% of the white race has been wiped out, but 28% of the black race has been wiped out. The black community makes up only 12% of the American population, but they have 36% of all the abortions–so black babies are dying more than 3x as fast! By 2008, close to 14,000,000 black babies have been killed by abortion.

These numbers are far more aggressive than anything accomplished by sterilization. Abortion has been more effective at achieving the eugenic agenda than forced sterilization ever was, because the birth control + abortion methodology is far more effective: instead of traumatizing women against their will, now they sell it as freedom, sell it as choice, sell it as a government funded service, and make hundreds of millions of dollars in the process, while achieving the same result: a declining black population.
This is a matter of historical fact: to maintain stable population, each family must have 2.1 children. Since 2003, the black community has dropped below that line, and is on the decline.
So it looks like the goals of the Negro Project were wildly successful after all: Almost universally, black leadership still votes and rules in favor of abortion, and abortion is the new golden egg of the eugenics movement.

I don’t know what more we can do to stop this, we try and put up bill boards telling the black population what is going on, but they don’t want to hear it. They get upset and want the bill boards to be taken down. They haven’t woke up to the realty yet and I don’t know if they will in time before it is too late. Their black leaders aren’t helping the matter at all. They keep on walking into those slaughter houses called abortion clinics like sheep to be slaughtered. Don’t listen to you and think everything is a joke. All we can do is pray for them. If they won’t save themselves I don’t know what we can do about. They just won’t listen to reason.

I might be wrongly attributing the quote, but I think Martin Luther King Jr. said that a lie cannot live forever. It’s frustrating for sure, and you can hardly reach everyone, but to say that they won’t ever listen to reason isn’t right; I’m sure many of King’s supporters thought no one would listen to them either, but they did. If efforts to turn back this tide save even one child, it will have been worth it, and I can guarantee that they’re doing better than that.

I suggest that everyone e-mail this report to as many of your friends and acquaintances as possible. Also, have these statistics with you when you go down to the abortion facilities to pray and offer potential clients of these abortions chambers a better way. Just have handy the addresses and phone numbers of the near by Crisis Pregnancy Centers. There this women will be offered help in finding the financial aide they may need and emotional support. It does not take much to save a women from abortion if you can just be there where the children are dying and offer an alternative.

Planned Parenthood is still, I believe, engaging in eugenics – the majority of those who have abortions are black women, as we already know. Alveda King has tried to engage the NAACP about this issue but they refuse. How is it that black citizens not allow their children’s lives to be terminated when it has been proven that this is definitely a form of genocide designed to eliminate the black race and other ‘undesirables’? Jesse Jackson was, at one time, adamantly pro-life; now, he is not. What changes the hearts and souls of men like Jackson? Did pro life become inconvenient to a political career? How can any man or woman, black or white – cut apart a living baby in the womb of his mother and not vomit in horror? We see ads and hear pleas all the time on behalf of abused animals…and it is sad to see these shivering, defenseless animals…but I’d like to see the baby in the womb in an ad side by side and ask – who must be saved first, a human baby or an animal if we cannot save all. Of course, nancy Pelosi put the lives of fish above the lives of humans so I’m sure there are those who believe the lives of animals are more important. Documentaries like “Blood Money” say so much on behalf of life, especially those grieving women who realized too late what they had done. That broke my heart. Please God, we will find more ways to reach the hearts and souls of others and help them to understand that all life comes from God and all life is sacred, a gift from God. Yet, we break that ‘gift’ and send it broken back to the Creator and do not understand the magnitude of what we have done by refusing life and the giftedness that comes with that life. But the victory is with life – always. Even if we can’t see it – yet.

Even Komen’s “Race for the Cure”–more than half of the money generated by this whole “Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Research” goes to Planned Parenthood. They do abortions target minority areas of the city to set up shop and dupe minority groups like the African American and Hispanic populations. People do not know this and the media will not touch it as it generates so much revenue for their stations it would not be financially in their best interest to “blow them out of the water”. Thanks you for this. I attended the Catholic pro life demonstration at Planned Parenthood several weeks ago, found out about the 40 days for life and also that the documentary “Blood Money” was going to be shown at a couple of places if Ft. Collins.
I got acquainted with Carol Everett and her book Scarlet Lady/Blood Money when she came to a church at which I fellow shipped in Denver several years ago. We had a S.E.E.D.S, Servants Equipping & Educating Disciples for Society which was headed by Lynne Hart, who had herself had an abortion.
The movie was well done, narrated by Alveda King, Martin Luther King’s niece. and, I told several of the right to life leaders that were there that my emotions when the film was over were a combination of sad and angry.
Carol Everett’s testimony was good and very consistent with what I remember of her, her testimony and her book. Bernard Nathanson was also in the film, he did not look well, and I had not known that he had passed away until I got the email from you.
Shortly after changing my party affiliation from (D) to (R) in 1998, I became a regular at the 20th and Vine abortuary in Denver, picketing with the John Brown Harper’s Ferry contingent of the right to life movement.
Since coming to Ft. Collins seven years ago, I have not been an active picketer, but have been a very active backer of the Person hood amendment in the last two election cycles.
I also was blessed to give a ride to a young woman who was on her way to Planned Parenthood (PP) for a pregnancy test. I told her about PP and said there was an alternative, the Alpha Center.
She said that she was a good Catholic girl, wanted to have a pregnancy test and would have the baby if she was pregnant. It was a cold snowy day, and, when Daphne and I walked into the Alpha Center, the four counselors looked pretty excited to have some business, and treated Daphne royally.
I found out that they were successful in their counseling, Daphne was a woman of her word who had the baby and she and the child are now living with her mother and raising her.
I am planning to share this with my 500+ Friday breakfast meeting notice plus the 40 days for life..

One time when I was having a major pity party about rejection by my biological mother, it was laid on my heart that, “She loved you enough to have you, and she loved you enough to give you up.” For that, I am eternally grateful, having grown old initially, growing old is mandatory, growing up is optional, and I may never exercise my option, in a wonderful nuclear family, father, mother and older sister, in Hot Springs, S.D.

I am in a country (Sri Lanka) which is being targeted by Planned Parenthood to legalise abortion here, and to take this country down the bloody road which the USA is now on.
Please tell me what i can do, to prevent this from happening here.
Already there are at least 600 to a 1000 illegal abortions being done here in Sri Lanka, an island to the south of India.

You would never see a single mother, or a teen mother here. Society shames such people. Therefore they are all getting abortions.
I would like the transcript of the movie to enable me to write articles in the press about this issue, any other information packets you can send me, and also permission to do screenings of this movie in churches. It would be great if you can send me an original DVD of this along with screening rights in churches, youth groups, schools etc. If you would permit cinema and TV screenings that would be even better. I am sure God will provide the resources to sponsor such telecasts and also overcome all opposition that is sure to come.
Also it would be good if you can put me in touch with pro life groups who can help me to protect the unborn in this country, and also to protect would be moms from the exploitation that the abortionists, and medical people would seek to profit from.

A friend sent me to this link not knowing that I recently came across another article on this subject. Now I want to know, who’s right? You use the same data to come to opposite conclusions so you can’t both be right. I don’t really like PP at all, but somehow I just don’t know that simply because this is the way history played out means that it was planned this way from the beginning.

Krista, fair question. It’s definitely odd when people pull from similar sources and draw opposite conclusions. As is the case with many subjects, things are often more complicated than they seem, and so are people. They say things they don’t mean; they change their mind over time. So it might be generalizing to make a sweeping statement that Margaret Sanger “WAS” a racist. It’s better to simply quote her and say, “that was a racist statement.” Then, when you collect multiple states over multiple years indicating the same sentiment, and you see how her trusted advisors and collegues were saying the same thing, you can say something a little bolder. You’ll notice in that article that there’s plenty of evidence we cited that they chose to leave out–I don’t see how anyone could dig through what we supplied and not draw similar conclusions.

How could Hitler think his agenda could be furthered around the world? Was he nuts? He looked at the American Experience, with a vision that now Planned Parenthood with UN support is carrying on.
A group of people organized as a “charitable” organization. What Hitler and PP share in common? The disposal of human beings as waste by abuse and violence as far as possible. Why some think it is unacceptable to discriminate people by race but it is acceptable to deliberately kill unborn persons. Hitler and PP’s principle is the same- some are inferior and a burden. The underlying root is selfishness- the attitude that another human being is less important to the extreme of dealing with such person as an object, then useless and even human waste.
I know that when I hurt someone in any way it is because I do not feel their hurt, but I complain as soon as someone does the same to me. There is an original lack of sympathy for others who are different, some kind of detachment that takes the form of sexism, racism, nationalism, fanaticism- in sports, politics and also in religion and in extreme cases takes the form of fratricide.
The unborn are undoubtedly persons, yes they are different but still persons. But they are disregarded as objects just as Hitler, Sanger and Gambler (using Puerto Rican women to test contraceptives) among others dealt with some people. I suspect the same selfishness that has brought about genocide of racially different people is bringing the genocide of people before they are born. The argument for the killing is the same, they are inferior human beings. This is consistent with the belief that some groups have a right that supersedes the rights of others, including the right to live. So today, just as before, in the heat of racism, it was held that white people had a right that superseded the value of the life of people of color, in the heat of feminism (as sexist as it’s male counterpart-”macho-ism”) UN upholds that women have a right that supersedes the value of life of unborn people.
On what grounds could anyone uphold such called “right of women”? A good advise, do not make a decision when angry or bitter or swept by emotions. Take the time to let the emotions clear so you can accept that the other person can suffer and has a dignity too. Do not try to impose anything, but acknowledge the value of life and above it defend it with your life.
Oppose laws and business that sponsor abortion. The evil is great. The correction ought to be even greater.
When asked “are you pro-life?” I wondered how could one not love life? When asked if I supported a woman’s “right” to chose abortion, I wondered what good is more valuable than life?

One thing I’d really like to say is the fact before buying more laptop or computer memory, have a look at the machine within which it will be installed. In case the machine is running Windows XP, for instance, a memory limit is 3.25GB.
